Admissions FAQs
How do I submit an Application?
All applications must be submitted through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS). Paper applications are no longer accepted. Please visit http://www.sophas.org/ for further details.
What is SOPHAS?
SOPHAS (Schools of Public Health Application Service) is the on-line centralized application service for accredited schools of public health. This streamlined application process allows the applicant to complete one application for admission and submit one set of credentials for verification and have the application sent to multiple schools. See http://www.sophas.org/ for further details.
What should be included in the personal statement?
The personal statement is intended as an opportunity for the applicant to express reasons for pursuing the M.P.H. degree, demonstrate commitment to the field of public health, and highlight areas that distinguish them as a candidate.
When are informational meetings for prospective students offered?
Each year, the Admissions Office hosts Campus Information Sessions. The purpose is to provide prospective students with information regarding Yale’s M.P.H. program, the admissions and financial aid processes, career services information, etc. All take place from 2pm-4pm in the Admissions Office. In addition to the on campus information sessions, we are pleased to host online sessions as well. For a list of fall information sessions or to register for one of these sessions, please select Information Sessions on the Admissions menu.
What are the minimum qualifications to apply for the Masters in Public Health?
Applicants should have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. At least one year of college-level math and one year of science: biology, chemistry, or physics is preferred. Work experience, including volunteer and unpaid positions, is also taken into consideration by the Admissions Committee. Applicants must also present evidence of their commitment to public health. When a candidate’s file is reviewed by the Admissions Committee, all credentials are taken into consideration. There is no single attribute which weighs more significantly than the next.
What standardized tests are required for admission to the M.P.H. program?
All candidates are required to submit at least one official test score report. There is NO exception granted for this application requirement. There are no minimum test scores required and we do not calculate averages or medians. However, due to the demanding quantitative nature of the program, a successful applicant typically scores in the 50th percentile or above on the quantitative section. While the GRE is preferred, candidates have the option of submitting one or more of the following standardized tests for admissions consideration:
Foreign nationals whose undergraduate, graduate or professional degrees were obtained from a country where English is not the primary language of instruction must also submit an official test score for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to the above. The SOPHAS code for TOEFL is 5688. Minimum scores for the various TOEFL tests are:
CBT = 250 iBT = 100 PBT = 600
Are Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores accepted for the M.P.H. program admissions?
LSAT scores are only accepted if the applicant is currently enrolled in the Yale Law School and is applying to the joint J.D./M.P.H. program.
What is the length of the M.P.H. program?
The M.P.H is a 2-year, 4-semester, 20 course program beginning in the fall of each year and cannot be shortened. All classes at the School of Public Health are held Monday through Friday during normal business hours. There are no evening, weekend or summer classes.
What are the eligibility requirements for the One-Year M.P.H. Program?

Program is an intensive program for individuals with a doctoral-level degree in a field related to public health (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., D.D.S., or Ph.D. in the biological, behavioral, or social sciences) or third year medical students who are currently enrolled in a U.S. accredited medical school. External third year medical students must enter the One-Year M.P.H. program (not a joint degree).
