The Select Program in Public Health
A Five Year B.A.-B.S./ M.P.H. Program
Program Design
Students should apply for admission to the program in the fall semester of their junior year. The next admission round - for the Yale College Class of 2010 - is scheduled for the fall 2008 semester. Admissions packets will be available to download from the B.A.-B.S./M.P.H. Admissions page in mid-September.
All candidates must present clear evidence of a commitment to improving the health of the public as well as quantitative skills. In addition, a year of college-level mathematics and a year of science and social science are strongly preferred, though some of these expectations can be completed after applying to the program. Additional expectations may apply to particular Divisions or Programs. Applicants must complete application forms and must submit transcripts, SAT scores, two letters of recommendation (at least one from an instructor in a Yale course), and two short essays. Approval by the Dean of the student's residential college is also required.
A total of 18 course units is required for the M.P.H. degree. In their four years of Yale College enrollment, students complete a standard Yale College major and six course units applicable toward the M.P.H. degree. Typically, four courses, including the M.P.H. core courses in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, will be taken at the School of Public Health during the student's senior year, with the precise sequence of courses determined by Division requirements and the student's undergraduate requirements. Two additional Yale College courses from a list of approved courses may be counted as M.P.H. program electives.
Students complete a public health internship between the fourth and fifth years of the B.A.-B.S./M.P.H. Program. They are in full-time residence at the School of Public Health during their fifth year in the program, during which time they complete their remaining ten courses and the master's thesis (2 course units). Further information about the Select Program or the application process can be obtained from the Office of Student Affairs at the School of Public Health by calling (203) 785-6260.
