Chronic Disease Epidemiology

Research

The major research focus of the CDE division is directed toward describing and understanding the etiology of important diseases and disorders. Among ongoing research projects:

  • Biomarkers of nutrient status for epidemiologic research
  • Effects of caffeine, electromagnetic fields, passive cigarette smoke, and alcohol exposure in pregnancy on fetal outcomes
  • Molecular and genetic cancer epidemiology
  • Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (EPESE) in New Haven
  • Psychosocial predictors of survival after myocardial infarction, hip fracture, and stroke
  • Longitudinal studies of successful aging
  • Cancer epidemiology: ongoing studies on breast cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer, endometrial cancer and other cancers
  • Cancer screening
  • Racial/ethnic disparities in health and health behaviors
  • Studies utilizing the Connecticut Tumor Registry
  • Longitudinal rates, trends, and outcomes of vascular disease in the elderly
  • Gender and racial disparities in vascular disease in the elderly
  • Risk factors for ovarian and breast cancer
  • Perinatal AIDS transmission
  • Meta-analysis of randomized trials
  • Genetic and environmental risk factors for asthma development and severity in early infancy
  • Pregnancy and preeclampsia in pregnancy
