The Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases brings together expertise in entomology, eco-epidemiology and human pathology to study zoonotic diseases. Researchers are currently studying tick-borne pathogens that cause Lyme disease, babesia, and human ehrlichiosis; mosquito-borne pathogens causing West Nile Virus and Dengue fever; as well as the urban slum disease, leptospirosis.

The work encompasses a range of projects including natural and artificial regulation of vector populations, vector competence for viral and bacterial pathogens, co-infection and transmissions of multiple pathogens, geographic and spatial analysis of epidemiological data, the use of satellite imagery to predict vector-borne disease risk, ecological drivers for human risk of exposure to vector-borne pathogens, and how tick-borne pathogens survive in their natural hosts and cause disease in humans.
