Melinda L. Irwin, Ph.D., M.P.H.
Assistant Professor, Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology
Social and Behavioral Sciences
Professor Irwin's primary research interests are in the areas
of physical activity and cancer prevention and prognosis. She
is trained in exercise physiology, epidemiology, and clinical
trials. Specifically, Professor Irwin's research involves examining
the effect of exercise on breast cancer biomarkers among high
risk individuals and cancer survivors. She is currently the principal
investigator on a randomized controlled trial among breast cancer
survivors designed to investigate the exercise effects on breast
tissue density and hormones associated with breast cancer risk
and recurrence. Other ongoing research includes physical activity
promotion and obesity prevention studies.
