Melinda M. Pettigrew, Ph.D.

Division of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases
Professor Pettigrew's research focuses on infectious diseases of infants, children, and young adults. Her current work utilizes a combined approach involving molecular biology and infectious disease epidemiology to identify bacterial virulence factors important for otitis media caused by the gram-positive pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae. In collaboration with researchers in the Center for Perinatal, Pediatric and Environmental Epidemiology, Professor Pettigrew is also studying the impact of environmental exposures on otitis media. A third project seeks to evaluate repeat chlamydia infections among young women in Connecticut. The study combines traditional epidemiologic methods and molecular genotyping of Chlamydia trachomatis strains to better understand the risk for repeat sexually transmitted infections in this population.
