Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases
Infectious diseases account for over 25 percent of global mortality. Mortality figures, however, give only a partial measure of the toll infectious diseases continue to take. The so–called neglected diseases result in severe and permanent disabilities and deformities,
and affect almost exclusively poor populations in remote areas that are beyond the reach of health services. In most cases, effective
measures to control these agents are lacking.
The Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (EMD) division engages in both research and training related to understanding the distribution,
transmission, pathogenesis and control of pathogens in a variety of international settings. Many EMD faculty members
collaborate with endemic country scientists to develop effective means to control these diseases. EMD students are often sponsored
to work on these projects as part of their summer internships through the Downs International Health Fellowships.
