Networking Reception Beneficial for Students and Alumni

“It isn’t just what you know, and it isn’t just who you know. It’s actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do for a living.” ~Bob Burg
Mingling at cocktail reception

On April 17, the Yale School of Public Health and the Association of Yale Alumni in Public Health hosted a cocktail reception for alumni and students at Scoozzi Trattoria & Wine Bar in New Haven. The reception presented students with the opportunity to meet and converse with alumni. Additionally, alumni, representing the classes of 1959 to 2007, had the opportunity to re-connect with old friends and make new ones.

“Our alumni are an invaluable resource to students,” stated Danielle S. Williams, J.D., Director of Alumni Affairs at YSPH. “It is vital for our students to establish connections with the alumni community of which they soon will become a part.” Ms. Williams says that students benefit from networking with alumni because they obtain career advice, guidance and support from those who have chosen similar career paths. “It is important for the wisdom and experiences of alumni to be imparted to YSPH students.”

Networking with students proves to be beneficial for alumni as well. According to Ms. Williams, attending these types of events enable alumni to meet with students who may be potential interns or new hires for open positions at their place of employment. “Meeting with current students provides alumni with the chance to extend their own network as well as to develop relationships with new talent emerging in their field.”

Close to 100 alumni and students mingled at the two-hour event. Those who attended were delighted with the opportunity the reception provided them and are eager for the next alumni-student affair.
