EPH Students Gain Field Experience in Vector Biology during Trip to CDC Dengue Branch Laboratory
Durland Fish, Ph.D., Professor of Epidemiology in the Division of Epidemiology
of Microbial Diseases, led a group of students on a March 14-21 field
trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dengue Branch
Laboratory in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as part of the CDC Training Program
in Vector Borne Diseases at Yale.
The trip, designed to provide students with field experience in vector
biology, consisted of lectures and tours by the CDC laboratory staff,
two days of field collecting and identifying mosquitoes in communities
where dengue cases have occurred, and one day of instruction in tropical
ecology with mosquito collections in El Yunque National Forest. The staff
at the Dengue Branch provided an excellent opportunity for the students
to learn about dengue, an acute febrile viral disease spread by mosquitoes,
and the problems associated with dengue prevention.
Trip participants included EPH predoctoral fellows Heidi Brown, Lee Cohnstaedt,
and Anne Gatewood, predoctoral student Yiqing Hu, MPH student Laura Kreuger,
postdoctoral research associate Maria Diuk-Wasser, and predoctoral CDC
fellows from Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies
and Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
First made in 2003, the trip to the Dengue Branch has become an annual
event. Fish says that participating students have learned a great deal
and gotten good field experience.
