From EPH to YNHH: Lara Hauslaib, M.P.H. '04, Receives Yale-New Haven Hospital FellowshipThis summer, as her classmates spread throughout the country and the world, Lara Hauslaib will be staying in New Haven to accept the prestigious Administrative Fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH). Hauslaib, an M.P.H. 04 in the Health Management Program (HMP), has been selected for the 2004-05 fellowship from among a large and very competitive applicant pool.
The one-year fellowship will provide Hauslaib the opportunity to work directly with a variety of clinicians and administrators. In addition, she will meet regularly with Joseph A. Zaccagnino, M.P.H. 70, President & CEO of YNHH and the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), and Marna Borgstrom, M.P.H. 79, Executive Vice President & COO of YNHH and Executive Vice President of YNHHS, who will serve as co-preceptors for Hauslaib. Over the course of the year, Hauslaib will work on teams dealing with YNHHs strategic planning and operations. Assignments are based on the hospitals needs and the fellows interests. Fellows have worked on a wide array of projects, including crisis management, facility planning for a new hospital building, market study coordination to acquire a psychiatric hospital, and the redesign of a patient transport system. The fellowship often leads to a permanent position at YNHH or YNHHS. Former fellows hold or have held positions including President & CEO of YNHH and YNHHS, Executive Vice President & COO of YNHH, and Director of Physician Services at YNHH. YNHHs fellowship program is highly competitive, with 50 to 60 applicants vying for the single slot. Fellows are required to have masters degrees in health services administration, business administration or other, closely related fields. Hauslaib noted that HMPs collaboration with Yales School of Management (SOM), through which HMP students take SOMs core class requirements, has given her an especially broad and useful background for the fellowship. She also credits the strong academic and practical training in the HMP at EPH for her success in attaining the fellowship. I am both excited and a little intimidated by the fellowship opportunity at Yale-New Haven. Having spoken with several individuals regarding the position, I know that I have a very challenging but enlightening and rewarding experience ahead of me. The EPH program has been key in preparing me to fully take advantage of this upcoming year as well as future opportunities, said Hauslaib. While Hauslaib maintains an open mind about the direction of her career, she is interested in clinical operations, particularly pediatrics. Prior to coming to EPH, Hauslaib spent two years at Childrens Hospital Boston, where she worked in the Division of Adolescent Medicine coordinating a fellowship training program and a peer program, as well as writing health education articles. The experience reinforced her desire to be involved in pediatrics. Hauslaib received a B.A. in Spanish from Tufts University in 1999, and
has been a member of the student chapter of the American College of Healthcare
Executives at EPH, as well as played soccer in the Yale Graduate Intramural
league and in a competitive Connecticut womens league. - Story by Christy Gordon, based on interview with Lara Hauslaib on March 23, 2004 and Yale-New Haven Hospitals Fellowship in Hospital Administration brochure. |
