Kickbusch an Invited Professor at Summer Course Given by Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health in Collaboration with Fulbright New Century Scholars Program

Ilona Kickbusch, Ph.D., Professor of Public Health in the Division of Global Health, will teach as an invited professor in the summer course entitled “Globalization and Health Challenges in Latin America,” to be held at the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) in Cuernavaca, Mexico from August 2-6. The course is being offered by INSP in collaboration with the Fulbright New Century Scholars Program. The course, which will focus on the impact of globalization on health in Latin America, was designed for students, health professionals, and health policy makers. Kickbusch will teach a session entitled "Introduction to the Field of Global Health."

TLR7's Role in Immune System Recognition of Viruses Discovered

These cells are situated strategically within lymphoid tissues (next to the blood vessels) to serve as sentinels of viral infection by recognizing viruses through TLRs such as TLR7. Systemic infection with viruses elicit type I interferon (antiviral factors) secretion from the plasmacytoid dendritic cells in the lymphoid tissues.

Value of Animal Studies to Clinical Research Questioned

In a recent publication of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), British scientists and an investigator from Yale University conclude that animal research done to support human trials and patient centered studies is often inadequately conducted and not systematically organized or reviewed, leading to difficulty in designing human trials.

Health Management Program Students Elect American College of Healthcare Executives Student Chapter Co-Chairs for 2004-05

Students in the Health Management Program (HMP) have elected Elinor Schwimmer ’05 and Matthew McDonough ’05 as the Yale HMP American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Student Chapter Co-Chairs for 2004-05. ACHE is an association of approximately 30,000 health care executives and students. In addition to the resources offered by ACHE to student members, the Yale HMP ACHE Student Chapter provides a variety of opportunities for the professional development of students interested in a health care management career. Members of the Yale HMP ACHE Student Chapter organize networking events, tours, fund raising, and executive speakers throughout the year. Students also attend the ACHE Congress, which brings together approximately 4,000 health care professionals and students every year.

Zhang to Speak at Biostatistics Conferences

Heping Zhang, Ph.D., Professor of Public Health in the Division of Biostatistics, will be an invited speaker at the Second Annual Connecticut American Statistical Association Mini-Conference, to be held at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Wallingford on March 13. Zhang’s address is entitled “Data Mining: Dimension Reduction.” The conference will include invited addresses, applied and technical sessions, and student presentations and poster sessions.

In addition, Zhang will be the main speaker at a March 21 workshop organized by the Neuroepidemiology Section of the National Institute on Aging, where he will speak on “Data Mining: Genetic and Genomic Applications.”
