Priscilla D. and William L. Kissick Scholarship
in Public Health Awarded to Sibyl Day, '04 M.P.H.
Sibyl Day, an ’04 M.P.H. in the Health Management Program (HMP),
has been awarded a Nathan Hale Scholarship named for Dr. William Kissick
and his wife Priscilla. Dr. Kissick is a 1953 graduate of Yale College.
He went on to receive his M.D. from the Yale School of Medicine in 1957,
and M.P.H. and Dr.Ph. degrees from EPH in 1959 and 1961, respectively.
Mrs. Kissick received an M.S.N. from the Yale School of Nursing in 1956.
Nathan Hale Scholarships are named for alumni who give $25,000 or more
in one year to Yale, and are given to students of Yale College. Dr. Kissick,
who is a Visiting Emeritus Professor and Lecturer in the Division of Health
Policy and Administration and in HMP, requested that the scholarship named
after him and his wife be transferred to EPH and given to an HMP student.
Elaine Anderson, Director of Alumni and Community Affairs at EPH, and
Bobbi Mark, Director of the Alumni Fund, coordinated the first-ever transfer
of a Nathan Hale Scholarship to a professional school.
“At Yale, I was fortunate to have a liberal education in Yale College
and the Medical School. My wife, a Yale nurse, recruited me to public
health, and three more years of liberal education,” Dr. Kissick
recalled.
“On my 50th Reunion of the class of ’53, there were calls
for contributions of ‘big bucks,’ including an invitation
to participate in the Nathan Hale Associates scholarship program of the
Yale Alumni Fund. Given my educational continuum at Yale, I felt that
a Priscilla D. and William L. Kissick Scholarship should be established
in Public Health, where I was a Visiting Professor,” he said.
“My faculty colleagues selected Sibyl Day, M.P.H. ’04, one
of my students in the course on Practice Management in Health. Priscilla
and I wish Sibyl the best in her career, which we hope she enjoys as much
as we have been challenged and rewarded by ours.”
Day graduated from Occidental College in 1996 with a B.A. in Biology.
From June 1997 to October 1999, Day worked at the BioGenesis Group in
San Diego. While at BioGenesis, she held various positions, each being
a promotion. From November 1999 until she began her studies at EPH, Day
worked at Dorland Global Healthcare Communications in San Francisco, where
she managed the development of educational and promotional programs for
three healthcare products. Day's work experience prior to coming to EPH
made her aware of the inequities in the accessibility of quality health
care for all persons.
While at EPH, Day was elected to be the Health Management Student Representative
in the Epidemiology and Public Health Student Organization (EPHSO) and
the Business Editor of the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics.
She also volunteered as a New Haven Public School Science Fair Mentor.
Day's ultimate goal upon graduating from EPH is to assume a leadership
role in the management of an institution that delivers care to vulnerable
populations. "I am honored to have been chosen for the Priscilla
D. and William L. Kissick Scholarship in Public Health. My interests revolve
around the intersection of healthcare management and public policy. Dr.
Kissick represents the ultimate model of a healthcare professional who
has achieved great success in both sectors," said Day.
