Dean Merson Speaks at Alumni Reception in Washington, D.C.

Michael Merson, M.D., Anna M.R. Lauder Professor and Dean of Public Health, was the featured speaker at an April 29 Alumni Reception held at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.

Dean Michael Merson visits with
Eliott Segal, M.P.H. '65 and
recipient of the 2001 Alumni
Distinguished Service Award.

During his talk, entitled “Public Health: A Global Concern,” Merson said that the focus of global health is “the impact of global interdependence on the determinants of health, the transfer of health risks, and the policy response of countries, international organizations and other actors in the global health arena,” noting that the goal of global health is “the equitable access to health in all regions of the globe.” Merson then discussed ways in which EPH is addressing various global public health challenges. He noted that EPH collaborates with other entities in the Emerging Infections Program and the Yale Center for Bioterrorism and Disease Outbreaks, both of which deal, in part, with the emergence of human pathogens like the SARS and West Nile viruses. He also discussed the global HIV/AIDS pandemic and gave an overview of the work of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA), which he directs. CIRA is staffed by faculty from several of Yale’s professional schools and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and has affiliated projects in Central America, throughout Africa, and in Asia and Russia.

Senda Benaissa, M.P.H. '95,
and her fiance Dr. Mario
Hernandez. Benaissa now
has a research position with
the World Bank after working
for Gallaudet Research
Institute for almost eight years.

The event, organized by the EPH alumni office, was attended by approximately 35 EPH alumni, 22 Yale School of Medicine alumni, and 3 M.P.H. students from the class of 2004. It allowed EPH alumni to revitalize professional connections, socialize, and welcome the almost-alumni members of the class of 2004 into their ranks.

Professor Curtis Patton, Professor
and Head of the Division of Global
Health, introduces students Stella
Koutros, M.P.H. '04, and Kevin
McGill, M.P.H. '04, to Merle Lewis,
M.P.H. '80, a senior staffer at the
Pan American Health Organization.
