The Open Society Institute and the Yale/WHO Collaborating Center: Building Partnerships in Global Health

Dr. Brian Williams of WHO speaks with Steven Neri and Nabila Alibhai. |
Yale and the Open Society Institute (OSI) are developing a new undertaking to build a stronger commitment to global health. Led by GHD Assistant Professor Jennifer Ruger and Professor Derek Yach, Head of the Yale School of Public Health’s Global Health Division (GHD), Yale, OSI and Temple Law School will work to explore ways of strengthening global governance for health. "It is clear that current and emerging issues in health require the full participation of diverse expertise that exists in a university and not just within a medical school or school of public health," says Yach.

To further this goal, GHD recently hosted a luncheon in Geneva, Switzerland to highlight and establish new opportunities for collaboration between Yale and international groups focusing on health research and governance. Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), The Global Forum on Health Research, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, the Council on Health Research for Development, the World Heart Federation, The International Union Against Cancer, and The Global Fund on Aids, Malaria and TB attended. Students interning at WHO, representing Yale’s schools of public health, medicine, law, management, and Yale College, were also in attendance. The meeting endorsed future interactions between Yale and the represented organizations for joint research and internship development programs.

The meeting represents an ongoing commitment on the part of GHD to employ innovative strategies and partnerships to address global health. Organized by Yach, the gathering served as an impetus for continued work through the School of Public Health’s Yale/WHO Collaborating Center for Health Promotion, Policy and Research on the topics of health research, gender policies, diabetes, tuberculosis, and global tobacco control.
