15th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction Raises Money and Awareness for Hunger and Homelessness in New Haven The 15th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction was held on November 9 in Harkness Ballroom. Goods and services donated by students, alumni, faculty, staff and local businesses were bid on by students and faculty in an effort to raise money for the hungry and homeless in New Haven. The auction, and a week-long series of events, is organized each year by students in Yale's health professional schools (the School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Yale Physician Associate Program). The proceeds from this year’s auction will be donated to the following local non-profit organizations, which work to alleviate hunger and homelessness in New Haven: Emergency Shelter Management Service, Community Health Care Van, Loaves and Fishes, Domestic Violence Services, Community Soup Kitchen, Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, and Caring Cuisine. In the weeks preceding the auction, activities included the Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau, a play by Richard Selzer, “The Doctor Stories,” a lunchtime talk with Dr. Bruce entitled, “Chasing the Dragon: Addiction and Homelessness,” a first-year students vs. second-year students Medical School flag football game, a day of service glaucoma screening at Yerwood Center in Stamford, and a silent auction. If you missed the auction, but would still like to donate, please visit the Hunger and Homelessness Web site. |
