Importance of Networking Impressed Upon Students at Annual Alumni-Student Event
Six Degrees of Separation or It’s a Small World After All, was the theme presented by keynote speaker, Linda Degutis, Dr.PH. ’94, M.S.N. ’82, President-Elect of the American Public Association and Director of the Yale Center for Public Health Preparedness, at this year’s Alumni-Student Networking Event on Dr. Degutis, an associate professor of surgery (emergency medicine) at the Yale School of Medicine and associate professor of public health in the division of Environmental Health Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health, drew from her many experiences to illustrate the importance of having social contacts. Highlighting having dinner with the Director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention to meeting Ivana Trump on airplane, Dr. Degutis provided students and alumni with numerous examples of how networking, simply talking to people, can lead to positive career opportunities that one never would have foreseen. She offered life lessons to follow in your professional life ranging from never losing your rolodex/pda to how to recognize networking opportunities. After Dr. Degutis’ presentation, concurrent breakout panel sessions for questions and answers were held for students interested in speaking with alumni in the fields of Academia and Pharmaceuticals; Consulting and Healthcare;, Federal, state & Local Government; and International and Community organizations. The panel sessions were followed by a student-alumni reception with hors d’oervres. The Alumni-Student Networking Event is an annual affair sponsored by the Offices of Career Services and Alumni Affairs. Dr. Degutis’ powerpoint presentation
