Chicken Pox Vaccine Effectiveness Decreases After First Year, But Still Yields Excellent Protection From the Virus

Yale researchers have found a major decrease in the effectiveness of varicella (chicken pox) vaccine after the first year of vaccination, but the vaccine is still very effective overall.

Student Research Day to Be Held May 11

This year’s Student Research Day will be held on Tuesday, May 11 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. in the Hope Building. Events will include a scientific poster session at which M.P.H. students, medical students and M.D./Ph.D. students will present their research work, oral presentation of five award-winning honors theses, and the annual Farr Lecture. This year’s Farr Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Story C. Landis, a nationally recognized neuroscientist and Director of the NIH-National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

All departmental and school-wide activities will be cancelled for the afternoon to allow all faculty and students to attend the scheduled events.

Patton to Serve on University-Wide Minority Advisory Council

On February 10, President Richard C. Levin announced that Curtis Patton, Ph.D., Head of the Division of Global Health and Professor of Epidemiology in the Division of the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, will serve on the 15-member University-wide Minority Advisory Council (MAC). MAC, which was recently re-established, will meet to discuss issues relating to the welfare of minority groups at Yale and will advise the President on the appropriateness of policies related to minority groups. Patton is the current chair of EPH’s Minority Affairs Committee.

In Memoriam: World Renowned Authority on Infectious Diseases, Robert E. Shope

Robert E. Shope, M.D., emeritus professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale School of Medicine, and professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, died at age 74 in Texas on January 19, 2004 after a long illness.
