Committee on International Health Announces Deadlines for Downs International Health Student Travel Fellowship 2008-2009 Each year, the Committee on International Health (CIH), awards the Downs International Health Student Travel Fellowship. Administered in honor of the memory of renowned physician and scientist Wilbur G. Downs, M.D., M.P.H., Professor of epidemiology and public health, the fellowship supports Yale students undertaking biomedical, medical, nursing, and/or public health research in developing countries. “There is a tremendous and growing interest in addressing global health issues among Yale students,” said Kaveh Khoshnood, PH.D., Chair of CIH. “We are grateful for the supporters of the Downs Fellowship which provides an excellent opportunity for many graduate students to pursue biomedical research in various parts of the globe. Downs Fellowships are awarded based on merit. The Fellowship provides students funds for transportation to and from their host countries, cost of visas, site-specific drugs, immunizations, evacuation insurance and a modest stipend. Research findings and experiences are presented by the Fellows at the annual Fall Symposium and Poster Session. Fellows may further develop their studies into a thesis or a dissertation. Past Downs Fellows from Yale School of Public Health have conducted research in Brazil, China, Colombia, Ghana, India, Iran, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and South Africa.
