Hoh Selected as Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar in Aging

Josephine Hoh, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, has been selected as an Ellison Medical Foundation New Scholar in Aging. The four year, $200,000 grant will further Dr. Hoh's earlier research, which identified at least one important genetic variant in Caucasian age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients. AMD is the most common cause of blindness among aging populations throughout the developed world.

Differential disease prevalence and phenotypes have been reported between Asians and Caucasians. The Ellison Medical Foundation grant will allow Dr. Hoh to investigate whether the same or a different genetic variant or gene involves Chinese AMD patients. Dr. Hoh's work is expected to dissect the racial differences in AMD etiology, and is crucial to developing prevention and effective treatment strategies for this devastating disease that negatively impacts the quality of life of millions of elderly individuals.
