Yale University to Host Second Annual Locks of Love Hair Drive The Second Annual Locks of Love Hair Drive at Yale University will take place on Monday, March 27, 2006 from 10am-8pm at Payne-Whitney Gym. Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children with long-term medical hair loss. Most of these children suffer from a condition called alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes the hair follicles to shut off. There is no known cause or cure. Other recipients of hairpieces are suffering long-term hair loss due to severe burns or surviving radiation treatment to the brain stem as a treatment for cancer. This year’s hair drive is being organized by Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) students, Ashlea Barret, Eva Chang, Jessica Clague, Lisa Bono Corredor, Nicki Lapidus, Diane Martinez, Sarah Merten, Anne Reiner, Diana Strong, Sharon Tsui, and Pui Ling Yau. Rimagé Salon & Spa and Nicole Pierre Salon are giving free haircuts to participants who donate 6+ inches of hair. For those participants that don’t have enough hair to donate, they can receive a haircut in exchange for a $25 donation to Locks of Love. There are 120 appointment slots available and walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment or to find out how to give a monetary donation, email yalelocksoflove@yale.edu. Last year’s hair drive raised over $1000 and collected over 90 ponytails. This event is being sponsored by the YSPH Student Organization (EPHSO), the Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate, Yale Reprographic and Imaging Services, the Medical Student Counsel, the Yale Health Professional School’s Committee Overseeing Volunteer Services, Branford Academy, Rimagé Salon and Spa, Nicole Pierre Salon, and North Haven Academy: Paul Mitchell Partner School. —Story by Marcie Foley |
