13th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction will Take Place
on November 17

The 13th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. on November 17 in Harkness Auditorium at the Sterling Hall of Medicine.

Students from EPH, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Physician Associate Program seek donations from local businesses and the health professional school communities and coordinate a week-long series of events which culminate in a live auction.

The proceeds of the auction will go to local non-profit organizations, which work to alleviate hunger and homelessness. The more than $29,000 raised last year benefited Loaves and Fishes, AIDS Project New Haven, Youth Continuum, Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven, the Community Health Care Van, Christian Community Action, FISH, and Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen.

In addition to the live auction, events planned for this year are Habitat for Humanity Build Day, a Karaoke Club Med benefit party, the first-year versus second-year charity flag football game, and a silent auction. Items auctioned at the silent and live auctions range from food, hobby and sporting lessons to the highly sought after items, such as stays in a flat in London to a weekend in the Berkshires.

The week of activities also strikes a serious note as it raises awareness of hunger and homelessness in the New Haven area. Almost 100 billion pounds of safe, edible food are thrown away each year by retailers, restaurants and farmers, while twenty-five million Americans, including 12 million children go hungry. (Source: USDA, 1997) Almost 70% of households at risk of hunger, have workers and 57% of at risk of hunger households have at least one full-time worker. (Source: Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project, 1995) These are just a sample of the many facts about hunger in America listed on the Hunger and Homelessness Auction's Web site.

This year's Hunger and Homelessness Auction is sponsored by Dwight Hall, the Committee Overseeing Volunteer Services, and the Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate.
