Committee on International Health Showcases Students' International

On Wednesday, October 20, the Committee
on International Health (CIH) held its Annual Fall Symposium to recognize
and display the international research of the medical, nursing, biomedical
studies and EPH students funded by its Downs International Health Student
Travel Program. Eight of this year's 17 fellows were EPH students.
During the poster session, EPH students presented their work, which
was conducted in Tanzania, Zambia, the Philippines, Iran, India, Nicaragua,
Brazil and China. Students' names and research topics are listed
below. Anna Beitin, M.P.H. 2005, whose project was entitled Genetic
Susceptibility to Malaria: Mif Polymorphisms in Zambian Children, was
one of three students selected to orally present their research at the
symposium.
The symposium is traditionally dedicated to the memory of Wilbur G. Downs,
M.D., M.P.H. Downs was a Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health in
the fields of tropical medicine and infectious diseases. This year's symposium
also honored Dr. Robert Shope and Dr. Jordi Casals, former members of
the CIH and colleagues of Downs who passed away in the last year.

Roderick Corro Deaño, M.P.H. 2005, discusses
his research project, entitled Determining Culturally Unique
Positive Health Behaviors of Children in the Assessment of Decreasing
the Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Iloilo and Guimaras of the
Philippines, during the Committee on International Health's
Annual Fall Symposium, which showcases the work of its Downs Fellows.
