Ph.D. Students in Divisions of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases and Health Policy and Administration Receive Recognition for Research

Kyeen Mesesan, an MD/PhD student in the Division of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases was awarded the Lee Lusted Prize for best student presentation at the 26th annual meeting of the Society for Medical Decision Making in Atlanta, GA. Ms. Mesesan's abstract entitled “Predicting the Impact of a Partially Effective HIV Vaccine and Subsequent Risk Behavior on the HIV Epidemic in Developing Countries: A South African Example” was one of 6 submissions delivered at the opening plenary session. Ms. Mesesan was previously awarded a pre-dissertation fellowship from the Yale Center for International and Area Studies to conduct her research in South Africa. Ms. Mesesan's PhD advisor is Dr. David Paltiel.

Lisa Gary, PhD student in the Division of Health Policy and Administration was awarded a grant from the Nonprofit Sector Research Fund of the Aspen Institute to support her dissertation research. Ms. Gary's dissertation topic is “Trust, Consumerism and Racial Disparities in Health Care: The Role of the Nonprofit Sector in Promoting a More Equitable Health Care System.” Ms. Gary recently received an award from the Dean's Fund for Research Workshops, Seminars and Colloquia for a student colloquium entitled “Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Study of Health.” Ms. Gary's advisor is Dr. Mark Schlesinger.

Nicole Quon, PhD student in the Division of Health Policy and Administration has received several awards to support her research. Both the National Science Foundation and the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy have awarded Ms. Quon research funds for her dissertation entitled “Decisions at Scientific Agencies: How do the NIH and the FDA Balance Expert Opinions, Changing Agendas, and Political Pressure?” In addition, Ms. Quon was the recipient of a John F. Enders grant in the Spring of 2004. Ms. Quon's advisor is Dr. Karl Kronebusch.

Angela Bauer Snyder, PhD student in the Division of Health Policy and Administration has been awarded a dissertation grant from the Department of Health and Human Services/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Ms. Snyder's research is entitled “The Effect of Substance Abuse Treatment on Wages.” Ms. Snyder's advisor is Dr. Jody Sindelar.
