14th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction Scheduled for November 16 The 14th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. on November 16 in Marigold’s Lounge. Students from the Schools of Public Health, Medicine, and Nursing seek donations from local businesses and the health professional school communities as well as coordinate a week-long series of events which culminate in a live auction. The proceeds of the auction will go to local non-profit organizations, which work to alleviate hunger and homelessness. Last year, the auction raised more than $30,000 and benefited Community Health Care Van, Youth Continuum, HAVEN Free Clinic, Liberty Community Services, Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, Christian Community Action, and Leadership Development Project (a division of Columbus House). In addition to the live auction, events planned for this year are a photographic art exhibit documenting New Haven’s homeless population, the first-year versus second-year charity flag football game, Karaoke Club Med, volunteering at Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen and a silent auction. The Silent Auction begins on November 13 in the anteroom of the Medical Library until 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 16 when it moves to Harkness Ballroom, ending at 6 p.m. Items auctioned at the silent and live auctions range from food, jewelry, hobby and sporting lessons to the highly sought after items, such as stays in a four bedroom Jamaican Villa to one week in a beachfront penthouse on Huchinson Island, Florida. The week of activities also strikes a serious note as it raises awareness of hunger and homelessness in the New Haven area. 26 million additional people could be fed, at U.S. levels of consumption, if the amount of edible food wasted in the United States each day were reduced by one-third. (Source: USDA, 1999) Federal programs to combat hunger and food insecurity reach only one third of needy older adults. (Source: American Dietetic Association, 1997) Approximately 4 million low-income children under the age of 12 experience hunger each year and an additional 9.6 million children are at risk of hunger. (Source: Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project, 1995) These are just a sample of the many facts about hunger in America listed on the Hunger and Homelessness Auction's Web site. This year's Hunger and Homelessness Auction is sponsored by Dwight Hall, the Committee Overseeing Volunteer Services, and the Yale Graduate and Professional Student Senate. |
