Dissertation Grants Awarded to YSPH Doctoral Students The following doctoral students at the Yale School of Public Health, recently received grants to fund their research: Norrina Allen, a student in the Division of Chronic Disease Epidemiology (CDE), received a dissertation grant for her research entitled, "Geographic Patterns in Recurrent Stroke Rates by Gender and Race". This is a Department of Health and Human Services Award through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Last year, Allen presented a study she led finding that lipid lowering agents used during ischemic stroke decreases in-hospital mortality at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference. These findings were also featured in the March 21, 2006 issue of Neurology Today. Allen’s advisor is Judy Lichtman, Ph.D., M.P.H. Associate Professor in CDE. Traci Green, has been awarded a National Research Service Award (NRSA) for her dissertation research entitled, “Substance Use, HIV Progression and Mortality in a Cohort of Aging Veterans". She is a student in the Division of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases (EMD). Green’s research is being conducted under the direction of Robert Heimer, Ph.D., Professor in EMD. Enrique Pouget has also received an NRSA award, which will fund his research, “Environmental Gender Balance and HIV Risk for African-American Women”. Trace Kershaw, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in CDE, advises Pouget.
