Health Management Program Student Wins 2005 Association of University Programs in Health Administration Bugbee-Falk Book Award

Marie-Helene Gratton, an M.P.H. candidate in the Health Management Program, is a recipient of the 2005 Bugbee Falk Book Award given by the Association of University Programs in Health (AUPHA), a global network of colleges, universities, faculty, individuals and organizations dedicated to the improvement of health care delivery through excellence in health administration education. The book award was established in 1973 to honor the lifetime accomplishments of Mr. George Bugbee and Dr. Isidore S. Falk in the development of health services administration education. The Bugbee-Falk Book Award bestows eight books written by respected authors in the field of health administration and general management. The book award serves to launch the recipient’s professional library. “It is a great feeling to receive an award associated with the AUPHA,” she remarked, “which does wonderful work to improve the delivery of health services and quality of life of citizens worldwide.”

Ms. Gratton recently begun her second year at the Yale School of Public Health and is doing a joint degree with the School of Management. This past summer, she worked in health economics and outcomes research for Boehringer Ingelheim, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. She collaborated on an article regarding the incidence and prevalence of restless legs syndrome in three insurance populations and evaluated the size and characteristics of an undiagnosed patient population suffering Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. The results of the NHANES analysis will be presented at the 2005 American Thoracic Society conference.

Prior to coming to Yale, Ms. Gratton was a business analyst in strategic planning and risk assessment at Bombardier for three years and then as a consultant for IMS Health for one year. Ms. Gratton was a finance major and received her Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University in 2000.
