April 2008, Volume 1, Number 2Introducing a new Feature... Around the Pump HandleThe public well, a common source of water for communities, was the water cooler of yore. A place where folks met, talked and got water. On September 7, 1854 Dr. John Snow is credited with taking bold action when he sensed that contaminated water from the public pump on Broad Street was the cause of the spread of deadly cholera during the 1854 outbreak in London. And some say, so began public health . . . . . We introduce a new section to this month’s newsletter. Around the Pump Handle is the lighter side of YSPH. Around the Pump Handle... Spring BreakEver wonder what goes on during Spring Break – both at the school and wherever folks travel? We did and here is what we found. Starting with the administration . . . . Dean Cleary’s calendar didn’t look much different from any other two week period, although he did sneak in a couple lunches at local restaurants with small groups of staff members. Brian Leaderer, Deputy Dean, spent the two week teaching lull focused on his research and working on two new grant proposals. In the Student Affairs Office, it all depends on your role. Dean Pistell took a couple days off to regroup, but worked most of the break. Susan Whalen, our Registrar, went skiing in Utah with a stopover in Las Vegas. Spring break is a busy time for Admissions. They were busy reading files and admitting next year’s class. Most of the students leave New Haven. The big trend in travel for the second year MPH students was to go on job interviews. The first year MPH students had more varied stories to tell. Family visits were prominent. One woman stayed in New Haven and entertained her Mom who visited from Montana. A gentleman visited his family in South Carolina. One first year woman went to New York to plan her wedding (congratulations!) and also write a research proposal. And another spent the time at home in New Jersey – trying to catch up on coursework – but didn’t quite make it. Some non-family related travel was also enjoyed. One pleasure trip to London was reported, and a trip to New Orleans to a Clinton Foundation conference – more a business than pleasure trip. (The report is that New Orleans is looking better all the time.) A visiting MD from Denmark got no real break. He continued working during the break but at least he didn’t have to get up for an 8:30 am Biostats class! The faculty who stayed in town worked on current research and future proposals. Those who left did field work, got a few pleasure trips in and visited family. Some weren’t as fortunate. Patricia Keenan had the flu. Otherwise, she would have joined the other faculty on the Admissions Committee who mostly stayed behind and read files looking for the class of 2010. We leave you with a mystery. Who is the bachelor male faculty member who spent his break in Florida with a single woman that he has been close to for a long time? He admits to barefoot walks on the beach and sharing her EventsMany events are added to the YSPH Calendar of Events each week. Check the calendar often for events around YSPH and the University campus.
