Global Health Equity Scholars Program at Yale University

The GHES Program supports one-year research training of post and predoctoral fellows at 12 partnering international institutions. The goal of the program is to generate a new and young cadre of global health researchers, educators and professionals from diverse disciplines to address health needs and promote social equity. Pre- and postdoctoral fellows from PhD, Md, DDS, DVM, PharmD, and LMIC programs are eligible.

A major focus of the program is the health challenges which have emerged due to the rapid growth of slum settlements in both urban and rural settings of low and middle-income countries. Factors associated with chronic, non-communicable, as well as infectious diseases, environmental health hazards, risks specific to women and children, intentional and unintentional injuries and mental disorders are potential areas of research that will be supported under this program. The program supports implementation research focused on providing accessible and high quality health care services at all levels in resource-limited settings.

The program led by a consortium between Yale University, University of California at Berkeley, Stanford and Florida International Universities and is sponsored by the Fogarty International Center and affiliated NIH institutes (R25 TW009338).

Yale University and its faculty support on-going research and training at 6 of the 12 international sites in the GHES Program, which include:

• Brazil: Urban slum health (Albert Ko, YSPH/YSM)
• Ethiopia: Health systems research and implementation in Ethiopia (Elizabeth Bradley, YSPH)
• China (Beijing): Cancer and environmental health in China (Tongzhang Zheng, YSPH)
• Malaysia: HIV, Tuberculosis and Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Treatment in Criminal Justice and Community Health Settings (Frederick Altice, YSM/YSPH)
• Peru: HIV prevention and treatment among men who have sex with men (MSM) (Frederick Altice, YSM/YSPH)
• Russia: HIV, Hepatitis C, drug addiction and harm reduction (Robert Heimer, YSPH)
• South Africa: HIV, Tuberculosis and Viral Hepatitis Prevention and Treatment in Criminal Justice and Community Health Settings (Gerald Friedland, YSM/YSPH)
• Uganda: Tsetse transmitted African trypanosomiasis (Serap Aksoy, YSPH)
• Uganda: Malaria (Sunil Parikh, YSPH)
  
• Ukraine: HIV prevention and treatment in prison populations (Frederick Altice, YSM/YSPH)

Fellows selected for the GHES program will perform one year mentored-based research at one of these sites and those hosted by the consortium institutions in Bangladesh, China (Chengdu), India, Kenya, Nicaragua, and Zimbabwe. Albert Icksang Ko, M.D. is the Program Director at Yale University.
