Financial Aid FAQs

Am I eligible for Financial Aid?
If you are a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, you are eligible to apply for financial aid for the academic year. Determination of your eligibility for need based aid is dependent upon your FAFSA results and the YSPH Financial Aid Application. All US Citizens and Permanent Residents applying to YSPH should file an application for financial aid by the March 1st deadline, regardless of your admissions status.

If you are an international applicant, you are not eligible to file for financial aid for the academic year. However, if you are applying for a credit based private education loan, Karen Wellman, Director of Financial Aid will direct you the Yale private/alternative lenders list. You will be required to have a US co-signer and anyone applying for a credit based loan should check their credit report in advance of submitting a loan application.

What is FAFSA?
FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is a federal tool used by Financial Aid Offices to determine student eligibility and prior student loan status. The following link brings you to their online application and website: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm. You will need a PIN from FAFSA to begin entering your financial data and the processing may take up to two weeks. Please plan accordingly so that the results reach our office by the March 1st deadline. The FAFSA only requires that you enter student information. As a graduate student you are considered an independent student by FAFSA.

How do I apply for financial aid with YSPH?
Three pieces of information are required and may be submitted as early as January 2nd but no later than March 1st:

  1. The Yale School of Public Health Financial Aid Application
  2. FAFSA results – The YSPH code is 001426 and the website is found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm. Only student information is required for all graduate students.
  3. 2009 Federal Tax Return - A signed copy of your submitted federal tax return (no schedules or attachments).

Where do I send my financial aid application materials?
The following items should be submitted as early as January 2nd but no later than March 1st as follows:

  1. FAFSA results – Electronically through the YSPH code 001426.
  2. Mailing address:
    YSPH Financial Aid Office
    Attn: Karen Wellman
    47 College Street, Suite 108
    New Haven, CT 06510
    or
    Fax to: 203-785-7356

When is the deadline for receipt of the financial aid application?
All three required items may be submitted as early as January 2nd but no later than March 1st.

Do I have to submit the financial aid application in any particular order?
No, but you must complete and submit all three components to be considered for need based aid. And be certain to include the Yale University code 001426 on the FAFSA.

How can I verify that my documents have been received?
Once you have completed your FAFSA, you can utilize the same PIN to verify your status and obtain a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR). We will notify you of the documents received by the Financial Aid Office via email. The email will be sent from ysph.admissions@yale.edu.

How long does it take to process my financial aid application?
Financial aid is not processed until an offer of admission has been made. However because we can evaluate financial aid and extend a financial aid offer fairly quickly, it is imperative that all of your documents are in-house as soon as possible. All financial aid applicants are notified via email of their financial aid award. Financial aid applicants that submit their materials after the March 1st deadline may be eligible for Federal loans only.

What aid can I apply for or might I see in my award letter?

  • Federal Student Loans (Subsidized) – These are need based loans that must be repaid. Subsidized loans do not accrue interest while you are in school at least halftime.
  • Federal Student Loans (Unsubsidized) – These loans are not based on financial need and must be repaid. Unsubsidized loans begin accruing interest from disbursement.
  • Graduate PLUS Loans – These are credit based loans and you must apply separately to the lender. Anyone applying for a credit based loan should check their credit report in advance of submitting a loan application.
  • Private/Alternative Loans – These are credit based loans and you must apply separately to the lender. You may be required to have a co-signer. Anyone applying for a credit based loan should check their credit report in advance of submitting a loan application.
  • Need based YSPH Grants – These named grants are awarded from the Financial Aid Office based on need. They are awarded to admitted students on a first come first served basis. Applications completed after the March 1st deadline may not be eligible for these awards. These awards are not repaid.
  • Scholarships – These scholarships are awarded from the Admissions Committee. Applicants DO NOT need to fill out additional forms to be eligible for scholarship however, because some are awarded on need and merit applications completed after the March 1st deadline may not be considered for these awards. A separate letter will be sent to the recipient from the Admissions Office. These awards are not repaid.

How do I make certain my award and federal loans will be applied to my student account?

  • You must print, accept, sign, date and return your financial aid award letter and Authorization to Process Stafford Loans form by the date indicated to:
    YSPH Office of Financial Aid
    Attn: Karen Wellman, Director
    47 College Street, Suite 108
    New Haven, CT 06510
    or
    Fax to: 203-785-7356
  • Shortly thereafter, you will receive notification from your designated lender to electronically sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN). Electronically sign and return your MPN immediately.
  • You will need to complete your entrance interview just prior to matriculation. After completion, you will be able to view your Yale Student Account and see the appropriate financial postings.
