Grants and Scholarships

Grants are need–based awards that are awarded in the Financial Aid Office. You must submit the following documentation by the March 1 deadline to be considered:

  • The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • The YSPH Financial Aid Application
  • A copy of your 2009 federal income tax return

Grants are funded through the following endowments, and recipients will be notified in the fall if they have been awarded one of the endowed scholarships.

Meet a few of our current students.

Anderson Alumni Scholarship

The Anderson Alumni Fund Scholarship was established by the friends and colleagues of Elaine Anderson to honor her outstanding service and achievements. Elaine graduated from the School of Public Health in 1976 and returned to the school in 1980 to establish the Resource Center for Health Professional Development. The Scholarship provides financial assistance to YSPH students with an interest in a career devoted to helping to eliminate health disparities.

Francis L. Black Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Dr. Francis L. Black Scholarship was established by the William H. Prusoff Foundation in memory of Dr. Black who was a faculty member at the School of Public Health. The Scholarship provides financial assistance to students in the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases Division.

George Martelon Memorial Scholarship Fund

The George Martelon Memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. Martelon Malone.

Bridgitte Prusoff Memorial Lecture and Scholarship Fund

The Brigitte Prusoff Scholarship was established in Dr. William Prusoff in memory of his wife who was a faculty member at the School of Public Health. The Scholarship provides financial assistance to students in the Chronic Disease Epidemiology Division.

Richard H. Schlesinger Scholarship Fund

The Richard H. Schlesinger Memorial Scholarship was established by Mrs. Claire Friend in honor of her son, Richard H. Schlesinger.

Charles and Agnes Talar Scholarship in Infectious Disease Epidemiology

The Scholarship, established by Cheryl Talar–Williams (MPH ’79) and Alan Williams in honor of Cheryl Talar–Williams’ parents Charles and Agnes. The Scholarship provides financial assistance to students in the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases Division.

John Thompson Scholarship Fund

The John Thompson Scholarship in memory of John Thompson to provide financial support to students in the Health Policy Administration Division.

The Robert E. and Jean E. Steele Scholarship

Established by the School of Public Health Alumnus Dr. Robert E. Steele and his wife Jean, the Scholarship is awarded to students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds whose prior experiences and stated interests suggest a career devoted to eliminating health disparities in urban settings in the United States.

Ruth and Milton Steinbach fund for Financial Aid

On March 4, 1991 the Ruth and Milton Steinbach Scholarship was funded through a trust established by Milton Steinbach. Mr. Steinbach was a member of the Yale College Class of 1924 Sheffield Scientific School and was particularly interested in medical education.

George L. LeBouvier/Robert W. McCollum Scholarship

Established by an alumnus who wishes to remain anonymous, this scholarship honors Dr. George L. LeBouvier, a former Senior Research Associate at the School whose contributions have had an impact in differentiating responses to natural versus vaccine induced immunity and Robert W. McCollum, a distinguished virologist and former Chairman of Epidemiology and Public Health. Preference will be given to students in the divisions of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, Biostatistics, Chronic Disease Epidemiology, and Environmental Health Sciences.

The following scholarships are awarded by the Admissions Committee, and no separate application is required:

Dean’s Scholarship

Each year the Admissions Committee selects two outstanding students as Dean’s Scholars. This merit based award covers full–tuition for the two consecutive years of the program, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Opportunity Scholarships

Awarded by the Admissions Committee, the Public Health Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to incoming YSPH students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States on the basis of a number of factors including financial need, a demonstrated interest in public health, outstanding ability, and high motivation for professional achievement. Preference may be given to applicants that have come from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Five awards are made to each incoming class. The full–tuition awards if for two consecutive years of the program, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Creed/Patton/Steele Endowed Scholarship

Recognizing the importance of diversity in graduate and professional education, the Creed/Patton/Steele Scholarship was established to serve as a visible and lasting tribute to these three men and their efforts as well as the enduring contributions made by all underrepresented minorities to the field of public health. Scholarship candidates must show an interest or experience in issues related to health disparities, service to vulnerable populations, and/or community health. They must also demonstrate outstanding potential for contribution to public health and social justice.

Overlook International Foundation Scholarship Fund

The Overlook International Foundation Scholarship recognizes the importance of educating students from Central America and Latin America in health care management and policy. One or more scholarships will be awarded each year to support students from Central America and Latin America with the hope that they will return to their home countries and improve health care delivery and policy. Funds are also used to support current students doing summer internships in Central America and Latin America.

Peace Corps Fellows/USA

As a Peace Corps Fellow, YSPH offers two $5,000 tuition scholarships each year to two Returning Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs). The fellowship will provide this funding for the two consecutive years of the MPH program. To be considered for this award, eligible admitted applicants must provide their DOS to the Office of Admissions. Candidates are selected by the Admissions Committee based on merit.
