Dr. Serap Aksoy's lab, in the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health is seeking postgraduate associates interested in vector biology, microbiology and biotechnology.
We study parasitic diseases transmitted by tsetse flies. We use the tsetse fly as a model organism to understand functional and evolutionary aspects of animal symbiosis with bacteria. These symbionts are necessary for immune developmental processes in the fly as well as for nutrient supplementation. We have also developed a strategy to modify the gut bacteria to interfere with parasite transmission, which we use to interfere with transmission of disease causing African trypanosomes. Our studies make use of state-of-the-art research technologies (including all forms of '-omics' based applications, gene knockdown/knockout technologies, advanced microscopy, etc.) to address basic biological and translational questions.
The postgraduate associate will actively engage in all aspects of research performed in the lab. Individuals with a bachelor’s or master’s degree and prior experience in molecular and microbiological techniques and bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to apply. The position is for 1 year, extendable to 2 years, with immediate start availability.
