Practice-Based Experience

How to complete your requirement

What is public health practice?

Public health practice is the strategic, organized, interdisciplinary application of knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to perform public health core functions (Public Health Practice Council, 1998).

Public health practice is a critical part of your educational experience at YSPH. In addition to supporting the development of skills important for a successful career, practice-based learning provides you with the opportunity to apply your classroom learning in real-world settings.

Two-year MPH

All two-year MPH candidates must complete a practice-based learning experience prior to graduation. The majority of students fulfill this requirement through a summer internship, which is between 8-12 weeks in duration. The Office of Public Health Practice will help ensure that your experience meets applied practice guidelines and will step you through the workplan process. The Career Management Center will assist you in ensuring that this experience meets your career and personal goals.

Advanced Professional MPH

If you are a student completing a one-year AP MPH, you are not required to complete a summer internship but may fulfill your applied practice experience through one of YSPH’s practicum courses.

Accelerated MBA/MPH

Accelerated MBA/MPH students may complete their MPH practice-based requirement through a public health focused internship or through a practicum course. Given the unique features of this program, your faculty advisor and the Office of Public Health Practice will work closely with you to develop an appropriate internship placement or practicum course to fulfill your applied practice requirement.
