PhD Application

PhD applicants must apply through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The application deadline is December 15. Applications submitted after the deadline are considered on a space available basis only. All candidates begin their program in the fall term. All applicants are notified of final action by April 1st. The non-refundable application fee is $105.

The Application

When applying via the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application, please choose “Public Health” as the program. Once this is done, you will be prompted to choose one of the tracks listed.

All applicants must submit the results of their Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). For information regarding GRE registration and test administration, please visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. The institution code name is Yale University. The institution code for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is 3987. A writing sample is NOT required when applying for a Ph.D. in our program.

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. The requirement for the TOEFL can be waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction. Applicants must have studied in residence at the baccalaureate institution for at least three (3) years to receive the waiver. A waiver will not be granted on the basis of an advanced degree M.A./M.S. or Ph.D) from any institution. TOEFL scores must be sent electronically to Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (institution code 3987). We suggest a minimum TOEFL score of 100.

The International English Language Test System (IELTS) test may be substituted for the TOEFL. Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the IELTS Electronic Score Download Service. We do not accept paper Test Report Forms nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRF’s). The institutional code for IELTS is 1424. You must request to have the scores made available to: Yale University – Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (also known as the Office of Graduate Admissions).
