As a first-year student in the Health Policy Management Department, Corey Aferiat has already had his eyes opened wide through his work with the YSPH Student Consulting Group. The volunteer organization is assisting Bridgeport Hospital and the Primary Care Action Group to complete a community needs assessment for the communities they serve.
“Every time I left a clinic or a food bank, I felt more and more of touch with what people are going through in their lives,” says Corey. “That’s why understanding population health is so important.”
With a goal of working in hospital administration and accountable care,
Corey believes that it is important to apply the concepts he is learning in his coursework to benefit patients. He has also gained a much more practical understanding of the Affordable Care Act and how individual provisions may affect certain groups. The Alumni Fund supports Corey’s studies at the Yale School of Public Health.
