11:30-12:30 Panel 1: Facilities and Operations Management

Healthcare facilities are highly energy intensive, with continuous operations, complex diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Energy demand reduction from buildings is widely recognized as a key component of greenhouse gas abatement strategies. Reliable measurements are essential for guiding evidence-based mitigation and improving resilience. Panelists will discuss state of the art measurements, improvement opportunities for energy use and the adoption of new sources of power generation and heating, drawing on examples from the Net Zero Carbon programme developed for the National Health Service in England. Healthcare facilities are, however, organizationally complex. Their goals are oriented toward human health rather than carbon emissions. Thus, multi-level efforts to create institutional and individual behaviour change where staff have varying reasons and abilities (or lack thereof) to act on energy efficiency interventions will also be addressed.

How clinical care is delivered ultimately determines health system emissions, including through building and energy use, transportation, and supply chain consumption. Mitigating the healthcare footprint requires interventions both to the healthcare system and to the factors driving demand. Shifts that have already taken place or are underway will be highlighted, such as. low-carbon clinical care pathways (where known), telehealth, social and green prescribing, and more. Here, we present a framework for constructing environmentally sustainable health systems, placing health equity and the social determinants of health at the forefront of sustainable health systems.

For over 30 years, Nordic hospitals and regional governments have formulated and adopted sustainability and environmental strategies to minimize adverse public health effects emerging from healthcare activities. Nordic Innovation, the intergovernmental organization, has therefore aptly described sustainable healthcare as a ‘Nordic stronghold’ within the region’s healthcare industry. Policies and legislations, innovative businesses, and an ingrained inclination towards a sustainable lifestyle have helped to realise the region’s success in this domain. This third part of the Symposium therefore draws from the Nordic experience to provide practical and actionable insights to decision makers and stakeholders in US healthcare.

On the first panel, we will delve into the region’s strategic development agenda for public and individual health, which is centered on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Highlighting the technology and data-driven approach deployed to deliver and monitor improved health and well-being, this discussion covers precision medicine, advanced health data analytics, and environmental sustainability measures across a range of health infrastructure.
