On September 30, 2021, the Yale-Sudan Program for Research Leadership celebrated the accomplishments of 27 graduates, all researchers from Ahfad University for Women, University of Gezira, University of Khartoum, Neelain University, and the Public Health Institute of Sudan, and Ministry of Health. The program, sponsored by the US Embassy in Khartoum, was designed to create a network of public health scholars prepared to foster mentorship and lead effective research teams within their universities.
For three months, this inaugural cohort participated in weekly live virtual sessions delivered by Yale’s Global Health Leadership Initiative, attended panel sessions by leading Sudanese researchers, and completed assignments in leadership and mentorship. The inaugural class, widely recognized as among the most promising research faculty in Sudan, are well-positioned for leadership roles and prepared to mentor rising scholars within their home institutions
Eight program alumni will continue on to participate in Yale-Sudan’s Scientific Writing Collaborative. Faculty from Yale and Emory will work with these alumni to develop peer reviewed manuscripts, one step in our broader commitment to ensuring that the work of Sudanese scholars is reflected in the global evidence base for public health.
This experience has supported the extension of my learning beyond the traditional scope of face-to-face learning. We were challenged to critically analyze our work situations and context with every discussion and reflection.
