Biography

Sinem Toraman Turk, PhD, is Associate Research Scientist at the Yale Global Health Leadership Initiative in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Yale School of Public Health. Dr. Toraman Turk is a research methodologist specializing in qualitative and mixed methods research. She is the director of an NIH R01 funded effort, Champions Advancing Racial Equity in Sepsis (CARES) that aims to develop and evaluate a coalition-based leadership intervention to equip health systems and their surrounding communities to mitigate structural racism and drive measurable reductions in inequities in sepsis outcomes. Before joining Yale, she was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center where she co-led the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Disparities Working Group, developed and managed the group's research portfolio on health disparities. Dr. Toraman Turk's research focuses on addressing health disparities in different contexts and advancing qualitative and mixed methods research methodologies. She is specifically interested in disparities in research participation, access to healthcare, and root causes of health disparities. Her methodological interests involve examining qualitative and mixed methods research applications and training practices. Her work involves a variety of research and evaluation projects that apply cutting-edge methodologies across the fields of education, health sciences, psychology, and social work.

Dr. Toraman Turk's current primary research portfolio includes a) equitable access to timely urgent care services, b) health disparities education and training practices in pediatric emergency medicine fellowships, c) the use of constant comparison technique as an integration approach in a mixed methods social network analysis study, and d) sample size practices in mixed methods research studies. Her work has been published in the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, American Psychological Association, and American Journal of Bioethics. Dr. Toraman Turk is a certified MAXQDA trainer and she delivers workshops and webinars across the world. She received the 2023 American Educational Research Association Mixed Methods Research Special Interest Group Outstanding Dissertation award, and her contributions to the field of mixed methods research are recognized and published in the Sage Video Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research Series as an online lecture.
