Sustainability in U.S. Health Care Symposium Announced

April 22, 2021

The Yale School of Public Health’s Program on Healthcare Environmental Sustainability, along with university and international partners, is hosting “Care Without Carbon: The Road to Sustainability in U.S. Health Care,” a free three-part symposium beginning May 27 that examines the health care industry’s role in greenhouse gas emissions, as well as proven strategies for mitigation and resilience.

The U.S. health sector currently emits 8.5% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions annually. In the last decade, these emissions increased by more than 30%. If the U.S. health sector were its own nation, it would rank 13th globally for greenhouse gas emissions.

The three sessions, led by experts in their fields and informed by global best practices, are:

Part 1: Sustainability in the U.S. Health Care Delivery Sector
May 27, 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Presented with the Yale Center for Business and the Environment.

Part 2: Lessons From the Greener NHS Initiative: Challenges and Opportunities on the Road to Net Zero Health Care
June 3, 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Presented with the University College London-Bartlett Energy Institute, the Lancet Countdown and the Northeastern University College of Engineering.

If the U.S. health sector were its own nation, it would rank 13th globally for greenhouse gas emissions.

Part 3: Lessons From the Nordic Sustainable Health Care Experience
June 10, 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Presented with the Nordic Center for Sustainable Healthcare.

Thanks to generous support, registration for the event is free. Registration and more information can be found on the event site.

The Yale Program on Healthcare Environmental Sustainability is part of the Center on Climate Change and Health and is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of health care itself through research, public policy and advocacy, and education. It is a transdisciplinary group of health professionals from the Yale schools of public health, medicine and nursing, in partnership with the Yale schools of the environment and management and the Yale-New Haven Health System.
