The Yale School of Public Health’s Program on Healthcare Environmental Sustainability, along with university and international partners, is hosting “Care Without Carbon: The Road to Sustainability in U.S. Health Care,” a free three-part symposium beginning May 27 that examines the health care industry’s role in greenhouse gas emissions, as well as proven strategies for mitigation and resilience.
The U.S. health sector currently emits 8.5% of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions annually. In the last decade, these emissions increased by more than 30%. If the U.S. health sector were its own nation, it would rank 13th globally for greenhouse gas emissions.

The Yale Program on Healthcare Environmental Sustainability is part of the Center on Climate Change and Health and is dedicated to improving the environmental performance of health care itself through research, public policy and advocacy, and education. It is a transdisciplinary group of health professionals from the Yale schools of public health, medicine and nursing, in partnership with the Yale schools of the environment and management and the Yale-New Haven Health System.
