All MPH candidates must complete a practicum to integrate classroom learning with real-life experience in a public health work environment, which allows them to learn from professionals in the field. Practicum options vary according to degree category. In planning your practicum, please refer to the Practicum Guidelines.
Two-year MPH Practicum Options
All conventional two-year MPH students are required to complete an appropriate 10-12 week public health internship which usually occurs following the first year of study. The internship is the preferred way to fulfill the practicum requirement and is required for graduation regardless of whether or not the internship experience fulfills the practicum requirement. If an internship does not satisfactorily meet the practicum guidelines, students have the alternative of completing an approved practicum course (see list of approved courses under Advanced Professional MPH Practicum Options).
Advanced Professional (AP) MPH Practicum Options
One-year AP students are not required to complete a summer internship and must fulfill their practicum requirement during the academic year by completing one of these practicum courses:
- Practice-based Community Health Research (EPH 542b)
- Health Management (HPM 555a)
- Health Policy (HPM 555b)
- Public Health Practicum (EPH 500b)
- Global Health Justice Practicum (CDE 586b)
- Practicum in Climate Change, Sustainability, and Public Health (EPH 555b)
Accelerated MBA/MPH Practicum Options
Accelerated MBA/MPH students are exempt from the mandatory YSPH summer internship requirement but must fulfill the YSPH public health practicum requirement. The Healthcare Management program strongly recommends the completion of a qualifying internship in the health care industry to fulfill the public health practicum requirement. If the student cannot find a suitable internship that meets his/her needs, the student can petition the Director or Associate Director of the Accelerated MBA/MPH program for a waiver. In lieu of a public health summer internship, those receiving a waiver are required to take one of the approved YSPH practicum courses during the academic year. (Please see list of courses under Advanced Professional Practicum option).
