Dr. Casanovas-Massana graduated with a PhD in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of Barcelona. His main work is focused on the dynamics of bacterial pathogens in the environment with a special focus in marginalized communities in developing countries. Together with Dr. Albert I. Ko, he studies the survival and spatiotemporal distribution of pathogenic Leptospira, the etiological agent of leptospirosis, in soil and water.
