After her MPH internship, Trena Mukherjee decided that she really wanted to do more research. Now completing her MPH in Chronic Disease Epidemiology and Global Health, Trena will return to Malaysia on Fulbright Fellowship in the fall and resume work with researchers at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. As a Downs fellow, she spent last summer in Malaysia studying drug use behaviors, stigma and attitudes towards methadone treatment among prisoners with a history of heroin use. Malaysia is known for strict drug laws, and there is a high prevalence of drug dependence and HIV in prisons. However, there is a methadone program in the prison and the inmates there are an unusually responsive group, says Trena. For her year-long Fulbright project, she will study community reintegration among this cohort.
