Addiction Medicine Grand Rounds: Engaging Spanish-Speaking Latinx Adults in Clinical Trials - Lessons Learned from Addictions Research

The Yale Program in Addiction Medicine is pleased to welcome Oscar Fernando Rojas Perez, PhD, and Yudilyn Jaramillo, MPH, as speakers for Addiction Medicine Grand Rounds on April 23, 2024.

This session of Addiction Medicine Grand Rounds will be held virtually via Zoom.

Topic: Engaging Spanish-Speaking Latinx Adults in Clinical Trials - Lessons Learned from Addictions Research

Learning Objectives:

  1. Extend and broaden understanding of how to leverage Latinx cultural values to increase research participation
  2. Increase awareness on how to incorporate technology-based interventions when working with Latinx populations
  3. Understand how a culturally responsive approach can enhance equity in research

    Addiction Medicine Grand Rounds are CME accredited. Each session will be assigned 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

    Oscar Fernando Rojas Perez, PhD, an assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine. He received his doctorate from the counseling psychology program at the University of Missouri and completed his pre-doctoral internship at La Clínica Hispana in the Yale Doctoral Internship in Clinical and Community Psychology. His professional contributions focus on the development and cultural/linguistic adaptation of measures and interventions, Latinx immigrant well-being and trauma, multicultural responsive training, and public policy advocacy. He is interested in (a) identifying cultural strengths and methods of healing, (b) using culturally responsive approaches focus on equity and liberation, and (c) improving the implementation of mental health interventions. Dr. Rojas Perez’s work has been presented at multiple national and international conferences. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including three American Psychological Association fellowships. Dr. Rojas Perez is also an affiliate of the NIMH funded Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS Clinical and Health Services Research Core at Yale University and fellow of the NIMHD Health Disparities Research Institute. Dr. Rojas Perez's co-authored book, ¿Quiénes somos y de dónde venimos? A Historical Context to Inform Mental Health Services with Latinx Populations, examines the various forms of oppression, colonialization, and sociopolitical and sociocultural factors that continue to influence the mental health of Latinxs in the United States.

    Yudilyn Jaramillo, MPH, is a public health professional looking to advance access to behavioral health for minority populations and investigate and help dissipate these individuals' health inequalities. She previously served as the research assistant on the evaluation of the enhancement of a web-based version of cognitive-behavioral therapy for Spanish alcohol use disorders in New Haven, CT, under the principal investigators Drs. Kathleen Carroll and Manuel Paris. She is currently working as a research coordinator on the evaluation and promotion of alcohol use disorder treatment after hospitalization under the principal investigators Dr. Brian Kiluk and Dr. E. Jen Edelman. Ms. Jaramillo is pursuing doctoral studies at Rutgers University. Her intended dissertation project is "Barriers and Facilitators Related to Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health Disorders in the Latinx Community and How to Improve Medical Outcomes."
