Internship Spotlight: Brett Martini (EMD)

October 03, 2022

Remote Internship at Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellow

Career Goal

I hope to work for a government agency as an epidemiologist, investigating disease outbreaks and designing interventions.

Internship Outline

As a participant, I was able to learn how to apply scientific and technical knowledge in the field of biostatistics and epidemiology to analyze clinical trial endpoint data, collect relevant statistical data, interpret results, and to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to propose recommendations influencing policy and processes.

Value of Experience

My internship experience was extremely valuable to me. The wide breadth of knowledge I was able to acquire over the course of the summer will help support a successful future. I think the biggest takeaway I had as an intern was the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork. In my role, I was able to collaborate with pharmacists, statisticians, and other key public health practitioners.

Best Moment/Experience

The most rewarding part of the internship was having my hard work displayed on the FDA website for the public. The most challenging aspect was balancing both work and life, as I feel the work portion took over a portion of my summer. However, I had a great support system through my mentors and friends to help me adjust. The most surprising aspect for me was how much I enjoyed working from home. I was extremely hesitant originally, but I am grateful I had an opportunity to explore this environment.

How did your first year at YSPH prepare you for this internship?

The introductory courses at YSPH really helped prepare me for this opportunity, from coding skills, to data analysis and visualization, to scientific writing, and much more! As well, the consistent support from faculty in the introductory courses really helped boost my confidence before starting my position. I am so grateful for both the lessons learned in the courses, as well as the individuals teaching them!

What would you say to a student who’s considering a similar internship?

I would tell someone who's considering a similar internship to not be afraid. Working for the government can be intimidating at first, but as long as you enter the role with an open mind and a willingness to learn, you will succeed in your role!
