Advanced Professional MPH Program

A Unique Opportunity

The Advanced Professional MPH Program provides a unique opportunity to complete our MPH program in just 11 months. We offer this program to individuals who have significant experience and/or an advanced degree in a field related to public health. Qualified individuals will have one of the following combinations of education and experience:

1. A doctoral (or international equivalent) degree in a field related to public health (e.g., physicians, dentists, podiatrists, pharmacists, veterinarians, attorneys, and those with a doctorate in the biological, behavioral, or social sciences)
2. A master’s degree and at least 2 years of relevant work experience
3. A bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of relevant work experience
4. Completion of the third year at an accredited medical, dental, or podiatric school in the United States.

The Curriculum

The program begins with an intensive 7-week summer session in July-August, followed by two full-time semesters of study. Students concentrate in one of six tracks:

• Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology
• Social and Behavioral Sciences
• Health Policy
• Global Health
• Preventive Medicine
• Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

After completing the 7-week summer session, students may choose to complete the remainder of the program on a part-time basis. All requirements must be completed within 3 years of the date of matriculation.

Note: Yale OEM fellows in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine track, Griffin Hospital residents in the Preventive Medicine track, and Yale joint MD/MPH students pursuing any track DO NOT begin the program in July and follow the 11-month schedule; instead, they complete the MPH degree over two years (four consecutive fall and spring semesters).

When you enroll at the Yale School of Public Health you'll hear a lot about hands on applied practice experience practicum projects. These immersive experiences are carefully planned, supported and evaluated by the Office of Public Health Practice. If you are a student completing a one-year AP MPH, you are not required to complete a summer internship but may fulfill your applied practice experience through one of YSPH’s distinctive practicum courses:

• Global Health and Justice - A collaborative clinic with the Yale Law School
• Public Health Practicum - Students select a field placement relevant to their interests and area of specialization
• Practice-based Community Health Research - Student teams work with local organizations to develop skills in planning and designing practice-based community health research projects. Course content is based on an ecological framework, principles of public health ethics, and a teaching strategy of significant learning experiences and team-based learning.
• Clinic in Environmental/Climate Justice, Sustainability, and Public Health - Interdisciplinary student teams carry out applied public health research or practice projects in the areas of environmental/climate justice, climate change, sustainability, and public health. Each team works with a sponsoring organization (e.g., unit within Yale, local health department, state agency, community organization, other non-governmental organization).
• Health Care Environmental Sustainability - If the US healthcare sector were a nation itself, it would rank 13th in the world for greenhouse gas emissions. Healthcare is an enormous, and complex system, in need of environmental health assessment and sustainability science to measure and mitigate pollution and public health damages. Policy and business innovation are also essential to implement pollution preventive efforts, while maintaining patient safety and quality care. Interdisciplinary student teams will perform applied public health or practice projects related to healthcare, sustainability science, and public health. Each team works with a clinical (physician or nurse) and/or management mentor from Yale-New Haven Hospital or its affiliates, or in collaboration with partners such as with the National Health Service Sustainable Development Unit of the United Kingdom. Each group uses the opportunity to apply concepts and competencies learned in the classroom uniquely to the field of healthcare.
• Health Care Management - Students are individually placed within hospitals/health care organizations, health technology firms and others working in the health care space.
• Health Policy - Students are individually placed within hospitals and other health care organizations, or in settings where they work on current state and/or local health policy issues with legislators, policy makers, and senior staff, or at non-profit health policy or advocacy groups.
