  • BIS Seminar: At warp speed: statistics and COVID-19 vaccine development

David Benseker, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor

Emory University Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics.

    October 27, 2020

Abstract: One of the best hopes we have of returning life to normal is to bring a safe and effective preventive COVID-19 vaccine to market and make it available to just about everybody around the world. We are in the middle of an unprecedented effort to bring such a vaccine to market. After a recent pressure campaign led by academic scientists, vaccine developers have made public the protocols for their Phase III trials. The release of these protocols has ignited a fierce debate as to whether the designs are appropriate and sufficiently safe-guarded from political pressure for vaccine approval. In this talk I will discuss a few of the complex issues involved in designing Phase III COVID vaccine trials, touching on some key statistical aspects of the trials along the way.

  • CT Governor Ned Lamont Welcomes YSPH Students with a Reopening Connecticut Panel Discussion

The Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) is honored to host Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont as he welcomes students back to campus for the Fall semester and discusses Connecticut’s COVID-19 efforts. Governor Lamont will be joined by a distinguished panel of guests including:

    • Dr. Albert Ko, MD - YSPH Professor and Chair of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases; Co-chair of the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group

    • Indra Nooyi (Yale SOM ’80) - Co-chair of the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group; Board co-chair of Advance CT; former CEO of PepsiCo

    • Maritza Bond, MPH – Director of Health for the City of New Haven

YSPH Dean Sten H. Vermund will serve as moderator for this event.

Guests will also be greeted by President Peter Salovey and City of New Haven Mayor, Justin Elicker.

Governor Ned Lamont was sworn into office in 2019 as the 89th Governor of the State of Connecticut. An alumnus of the Yale School of Management (MBA ’80), Governor Lamont is the first Connecticut Governor in 80 years to get his start as a businessman and job creator. He is the founder of Lamont Digital Systems, a telecommunications company and began his political career as a member of the Greenwich, CT Board of Selectmen and Board of Estimation and Taxation. As Governor, he formed the Reopen Connecticut Advisory Group in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The group consists of leaders from business and public health, working in partnership with the State of Connecticut to determine when and how to reopen the economy and education systems. To do so, they have had to balance the two pressing priorities of economic concerns with public health implications.

  • Science in the time of coronavirus

How do we trace the origins of viral outbreaks? How do viruses change hosts? What can evolution tell us how long a recovered person will be immune before reinfection? And how do a marine biologist and a fungal geneticist end up working together on virus evolution? This week, join Drs. Jeffrey Townsend (Yale University) and Alex Dornburg (Museum and UNC Charlotte) for an informal conversation about how scientists have mobilized to face evolving threats to human health.
