Prominent New York Times journalist gives next Dean’s Lecture; Leaders in Public Health-Dean’s Speaker series welcomes New York City health commissioner

The Yale School of Public Health is excited to announce the guest speakers for its Spring 2024 Dean’s Lecture Series and Leaders in Public Health-Dean’s Speaker series. These events invite public health experts and thought leaders to join the YSPH community in exploring vital topics about scientific rigor and diversity, equity, and inclusion in public health. The events are intended to foster meaningful conversations that transcend classrooms and laboratories and connect with a global audience.

YSPH Dean’s Lecture Series

Feb. 12: YSPH and the Yale Poynter Fellowship in Journalism will present “Storytelling for Social Justice and Health” with journalist, author, editor, and educator Linda Villarosa. Villarosa is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, where she covers race, inequality, and public health. A former executive editor of Essence magazine, she is the author of Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation.

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism brings prominent journalists to Yale, offering students and faculty the opportunity to engage with them and gain insights into the media’s role in culture. Visit the Events Calendar for more information and to register for the event.

Leaders in Public Health – Dean’s Speaker Series

The YSPH Leaders in Public Health – Dean’s Speaker Series invites renowned guests to join a discussion on the future of public health in the areas of innovation, communication, inclusivity, and data-driven leadership. Visit the series website to learn more and view past lectures.

Feb. 15: The YSPH Leaders in Public Health – Dean’s Speaker Series welcomes Ashwin Vasan, commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, for a fireside chat with Dean Megan L. Ranney, MD. They will discuss how government and academic institutions can work together on solving macro-level health issues.

Vasan is a practicing primary care physician, epidemiologist, and public health expert with nearly 20 years of experience working to improve physical and mental health, social welfare, and public policy outcomes for marginalized populations in New York City, nationally and globally. In addition to the fireside chat, Vasan will also present the seminar “Climate Change at your Doorstep: How NYC is facing down extreme weather and its health effects” to students and faculty in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.

Future Leaders in Public Health – Dean’s Speaker Series speakers include:

March 28: Andy Slavitt, former acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

April 4: Alex M. Azar II, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

All speaker events take place in Winslow Auditorium in the lower level of the LEPH building at 60 College St. Events are open to the Yale community for in-person attendance. The public is invited to join via Zoom webinar.
